I've posted about the Mayor of Caracas before. Some SOLOists may be familiar with him already. For those who are not, let me introduce to you the bravest man in Venezuela:

Leopoldo Eduardo López - Mayor of Chacao, Caracas

López is among at least 270 Venezuelans investigated for corruption by the Venezuelan government who have been barred from running in the November 2008 elections; eighty percent of them belong to the opposition.

From Citymayors.com:
As a city leader, López has talent and energy in spades, but even his allies confess he needs to restrain his temper and act with more humility on occasion.

Bah!

In July 2000, aged just 29, López was elected as Mayor of Chacao Municipality on just 51 per cent of the vote, though he increased this to 81 per cent on his re-election in October 2004. With the emergence of Zulia state governor Manuel Rosales as Hugo Chavez’ principal challenger in the 2006 presidential election, López and several others from Justice First switched their allegiance to Rosales’ party, the social democratic A New Era (Un Nuevo Tiempo).

So he's not exactly libertarian friendly, being a "social democrat", but considering where he is, the man must at least be given kudos for bravery in fighting against the corruption and abuse of power in Venezuela. I had read somewhere that he does have quite "right" economic views, and his party alignment may be strategic rather than principled.

Since becoming mayor, López has been on the receiving end of several kidnapping attempts, both successful and unsuccessful and even an assassination attempt.
These attempts of course were ordered inspired by Chavez' himself fanatical supporters.
