Arrived in Melbourne

I've arrived in Melbourne :-)  Things are quite hectic at the moment, we're meeting with an accountant on Tuesday to set up the company, and I've already begun purchasing the essentials of life (PDA, cellphone, suit).

Hopefully within the next few days we'll sort out a place to rent, which we'll be using both as a home and as an office, for the time being.

I've created a Melbourne set on Flickr to share photos that I take while I'm here, as I've been doing the whole tourist thing, carrying around a camera wherever I go Smiling

However, once things have settled down a bit (probably in about a fortnight or so) I'll be making a concerted effort to get all the Melbourne SOLOists together for a meet & greet.

Should be a nice early night. Smiling

Actually, Prodos is on SOLO. I'm sure he'd love to hear from you. I didn't realise he's in Melbourne. Aside from that, as far as I know, you're starting from scratch. NZ is spoiled for Objectivists. Smiling

That's just as well as you'd

That's just as well as you'd have hated it.

So you're going to get together with yourself? Should do that every day, good show.

Things have actually been amazingly hectic (I'll be posting about it shortly).  However, once things have settled down a bit (probably in about a fortnight or so) I'll be making a concerted effort to get all the Melbourne SOLOists together for a meet & greet.

Once we actually know each other, I'm hoping to organise some sort of regular philosophical / political / beer discussion group.

Thanks for the heads-up ...

... but my evening is already pretty much mapped out: contract-hunting, organising the sale of our house in Auckland with my wife, having dinner with my business partner & his sister (I'm cooking - beef in black bean sauce).

Here you go Duncan. Failing SOLO-Oz, you can pop up to Collingwood and hang out with Prodos tonight. Just the thing for you, seemingly...

Dear Friends,

Good afternoon!

For Discover Capitalism (tm) tomorrow, Tuesday March 06,
we'll be discussing "Great Entrepreneurs & What Makes them Tick!"

The sorts of questions we'll explore include ...

What do they have in common?
How do they differ?
How do they define success?
How do they view wealth and profit?
How do they see themselves?
How creative are they - and in what ways?
What's their view of the customer and the market?
What motivates them?
What makes them different from others?

And that's just for starters!

We'll briefly look at the life and work of a range of
entrepreneurs to see what we can learn about them and from them.

Here, enjoy some quotes from these Titans:

Ray Kroc (McDonald's):
If you're not a risk taker, you should get the hell out of business.

Thomas Edison:
"I never perfected an invention that I did not think about in terms of the
service it might give others... I find out what the world needs, then I proceed to
invent."

Bill Gates:
"Our success has really been based on partnerships from the very beginning."

Henry Ford:
"The man who will use his skill and constructive imagination to see how much he
can give for a dollar, instead of how little he can give for a dollar, is bound to
succeed."

Steve Jobs (Apple Computers):
"You can't just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them.
By the time you get it built, they'll want something new."

Jeff Bezos (Amazon.com founder):
"[In online business] if you make a customer unhappy they won't tell five
friends, they'll tell 5,000 friends."

Mary Kay Ash (Mary Kay Cosmetics):
"It is far better to be exhausted from success than to be rested from
failure."

Madam C J Walker (America's first black female millionaire, 1867 - 1919)
"I had to make my own living and my own opportunity! But I made it! Don't sit
down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up and make them!"

J. P. Morgan (Banker/Financier, 1837 1913)
"Go as far as you can see; when you get there, you'll be able to see
farther."

What a night it's going to be! Smiling

Very good then.
Great city. Cross between Christchurch and Auckland don't you find? Perfect combination for me.

Might drop in on you in a couple of weeks eh?

Bright lights...

My you have an eye, Duncan - what a gorgeous photo!

It was great to finally meet you the other night -- it's just a shame it was also a farewell.

KAASS!
